Answer
A five-member committee founded what would become The Red Cross in 1863. The committee members were Gustave Moynier, Louis Appia, Henri Dunant, Theodore Maunoir, and Charles Van de Velde. Dunant had been a Swiss businessman who witnessed the Battle of Solferino in 1859 and was appalled by the lack of medical care for the wounded.
