Henry Hudson made four voyages during his life. The first was in 1607, when he was commissioned by the Dutch East India Company to find a northeast passage to Asia. He sailed from Amsterdam to Novaya Zemlya, but was forced to turn back because of ice. The second voyage was in 1608, when he was commissioned by the Muscovy Company to find a northwest passage to Asia.
