Henry IV, then known as Henry Bolingbroke, was exiled from England in 1398 after a political dispute with his cousin, King Richard II. Bolingbroke had accused Richard of misgovernance, and Richard had retaliated by stripping him of his titles and lands. Bolingbroke subsequently launched an invasion of England and eventually claimed the throne as Henry IV, deposing Richard in the process.
