Wilson worked hard to build the Anti-slavery Coalition. This coalition was composed of both Northern and Southern Democrats, and was opposed to the expansion of slavery into the territories. The coalition was successful in defeating the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which would have allowed slavery in the territories, and in electing James Buchanan as president in 1856.
