Wilson helped found the Republican Party. He did this in 1854, when he joined a group of other abolitionists who were opposed to the Kansas-Nebraska Act. The Act allowed slavery to be legal in the territories of Kansas and Nebraska, and Wilson believed that this would lead to the expansion of slavery into the West.
