Hephaestion was a Macedonian nobleman and a close friend of Alexander the Great. He served as Alexander's close companion and general, and was given the title of chiliarch, or commander of the royal bodyguard. Hephaestion died in 324 BC, and Alexander was said to have been inconsolable after his death.
