Herbert von Karajan was a conductor who is widely considered to be one of the greatest of all time. He was born in Salzburg, Austria, in 1908, and began his musical career as a pianist. He later studied conducting and became the principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 1955. He held this position until his death in 1989.
