Herbert von Karajan began conducting between 1925 and 1935. He was born in Austria-Hungary in 1908, and began his musical career as a violinist. He studied conducting with Bruno Walter and Wilhelm Furtwängler, and made his conducting debut in 1929. In 1933, he became the principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held until 1945.
