German-Swiss writer Hermann Hesse was born in Calw, Germany, in 1877. His father was German and his mother was Swiss. Hesse spent his childhood in Germany and Switzerland, and he later lived in Italy, India, and the United States. He wrote in both German and Swiss German, and he is considered one of the most important writers of the 20th century.
