The Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto set out on an expedition to find gold in North America in 1539. He traveled through the southeastern United States, looking for the fabled cities of gold. He also searched for a passage to China or the Pacific Coast. He never found either gold or a passage to Asia, but he did explore much of the southeastern United States.
