Anaesthetist Hilda Roberts was a pioneer in her field. She was the first woman to be appointed as a consultant anaesthetist in the UK, in 1947. She was also the first woman to be elected President of the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland, in 1962. Roberts was a strong advocate for the use of regional anaesthesia, which is less invasive than general anaesthesia.
