American Hiram Bingham III was an explorer, historian, and politician. He is best known for his discovery of the Inca city of Machu Picchu in 1911. Bingham was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, to American parents. He graduated from Yale University and later earned a doctorate in history from Harvard University. Bingham served as a professor of history at Yale University and as a member of the Connecticut State Senate.
