Sakaguchi helped Square become independent in 1986. He had been working as a programmer for Square since 1982, and he helped to develop the company's first game, Final Fantasy. In 1986, Sakaguchi and two other Square employees left the company to form their own company, called Squaresoft. Squaresoft was eventually renamed Square Enix, and it is now one of the largest video game companies in the world.
