The Hongwu Emperor established the Embroidered Uniform Guard as one of his secret police organizations. It was formed in 1368 and was originally called the Imperial Guards. Its members were hand-picked by the emperor and were required to be loyal to him above all else. The Embroidered Uniform Guard had a wide range of powers, including the ability to arrest and execute people without going through the legal system.
