Smith-Dorrien held several senior commands in the British Expeditionary Force (BEF). He was commander of I Corps in the early months of World War I, and later commanded II Corps and the British Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders. He was a capable and experienced commander, but he was often overshadowed by his more senior colleagues, and he was eventually dismissed from command.
