Smith-Dorrien was a general in the Second Boer War. He was born in London in 1858 and joined the British Army in 1874. He served in the Sudan Campaign and the Second Afghan War before being sent to South Africa in 1899 to fight in the Second Boer War. He was promoted to major-general in 1900 and led the 19th Infantry Division at the Battle of Colenso.
