In 1960, Australian Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies called Howard Florey "the most important man ever born in Australia". Florey had been awarded the Nobel Prize in 1945 for his work on penicillin, which he discovered with Ernst Chain. Florey also led the team that developed penicillin into a usable drug.
