Between December 1978 and June 1981, Hua Guofeng lost his position as paramount leader. Hua had come to power in the wake of the death of Mao Zedong in 1976, and he initially enjoyed the support of both the military and the Communist Party. However, Hua's policies were unpopular with many in the party, and he was eventually forced to step down in favor of Deng Xiaoping.
