In 1970, the presidential council was made up of Justin Ahomadegbé-Tomêtin and Sourou Migan Apithy. The council was formed after the assassination of President Hubert Maga. Ahomadegbé-Tomêtin served as president of the council, while Apithy was vice president. The council ruled the country until 1972, when it was overthrown by a military coup.
