Hugh James (1761-1822) was a Scottish physician, naturalist, and botanist. He was born in Edinburgh and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. After graduating, he worked as a physician in Edinburgh and also taught botany. In 1807, he was appointed Professor of Botany at the University of Glasgow. He held this position until his death in 1822.
