In addition to his work as a jurist, Hugo Black also practiced law in his early life. He was admitted to the bar in 1910 and worked as a lawyer in Birmingham, Alabama, for several years before being elected to the United States Senate in 1926. Black served in the Senate until 1937, when he was appointed to the Supreme Court by Franklin D. Roosevelt.
