William O. Douglas was an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1939 to 1975, longer than any other Justice appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Douglas was a liberal justice who supported the New Deal and the civil rights movement. He was also an outspoken critic of the Vietnam War. Douglas retired from the Supreme Court in 1975 and died in 1980.
