Grotius was imprisoned in the castle of Loevestein, on the border between the Dutch Republic and the Spanish Empire, after being arrested on charges of high treason. In 1621, he escaped from prison by hiding in a chest of books that was being sent to the library of the castle. The chest was loaded onto a cart and taken to the castle gate, where it was loaded onto a barge.
