Grotius escaped from Loevestein Castle in 1621, while he was imprisoned there by the Dutch Republic for his opposition to the States-General's decision to go to war with Spain. He hid in a trunk of books that was smuggled out of the castle by his wife, Maria van Reigersberch. Grotius then traveled to France, where he lived for the rest of his life.
