Suhrawardy was elected to the Bengal Legislative Assembly in 1937. He served as a member of the Assembly until 1946. During his time in the Assembly, he was a vocal advocate for the rights of Muslims in Bengal. He also played a key role in the negotiations that led to the creation of Pakistan in 1947.
