Tipu Sultan was the eldest son of Hyder Ali, the ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore in southern India. Tipu Sultan succeeded his father as the ruler of Mysore in 1782 and continued his father's resistance against the British East India Company. He was a skilled military strategist and a patron of the arts and sciences. Tipu Sultan was killed in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War in 1799.
