Before becoming the President of Botswana, Khama served as the Vice-President of Botswana from 1989 to 1998. He was also the Commander-in-Chief of the Botswana Defence Force from 1997 to 1998. During his time as Vice-President, Khama was instrumental in the development of Botswana's economy and in the country's transition to democracy. He also played a key role in the resolution of the Namibian War of Independence.
