Ernest Shonekan succeeded Babangida as the head of state after he was forced to resign in August 1993. Shonekan was a former head of the Nigerian Supreme Court and had served as chairman of the National Defense and Security Council under Babangida. He was seen as a moderate figure who could help to restore order to Nigeria after the political turmoil of the early 1990s.
