Kolomoyskyi served as the Governor of Dnipropetrovsk from 2014 to 2016. He was appointed to the position by then-President Petro Poroshenko in the aftermath of the Euromaidan Revolution and the Russian annexation of Crimea. Kolomoyskyi played a key role in organizing and financing volunteer battalions to fight against Russian-backed separatists in the Donbas region.
