Ilan Ramon went to space in 2003. Ramon was an Israeli Air Force fighter pilot, test pilot, and astronaut. He was selected as Israel's first astronaut in 1998, and he flew on the Space Shuttle Columbia in 2003. Ramon was one of the seven astronauts who died when Columbia disintegrated during re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere on February 1, 2003.
