Spartak Moscow was Ilya Kovalchuk's first team in the Vysshaya Liga, the top tier of Russian ice hockey. He joined the team in 1999 at the age of 16 and quickly became one of their top players. Kovalchuk's impressive performance with Spartak Moscow caught the attention of NHL scouts, and he was eventually drafted first overall by the Atlanta Thrashers in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.
