Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov, better known as Ilya Metchnikoff, was born in Kherson, Russian Empire, in 1845. His father was a Romanian, and his mother was a Ukrainian-Jewish woman. Mechnikov was a zoologist and bacteriologist who is best known for his work on phagocytosis and immunity. He won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1908 for his work on phagocytosis.
