Imad Mughniyeh, an Iranian-born member of the Lebanese Hezbollah group, played a key role in removing the US military presence in Lebanon in the 1980s. Mughniyeh was responsible for planning and carrying out a series of attacks on US targets in Lebanon, including the 1983 bombing of the US Embassy in Beirut and the 1983 bombing of the US Marine barracks in Beirut.
