During his leadership as Imam of Dagestan and Chechnya in the 19th century, Imam Shamil advocated for and called for a holy war, known as Jihad, against the encroaching Russian Empire. This call to arms was made in an effort to defend the cultural, religious, and political autonomy of the Muslim communities in the North Caucasus region from Russian expansion and colonization.
