In 1958, former Hungarian Prime Minister Imre Nagy was executed for treason by the Soviet-backed regime. Nagy had been prime minister of Hungary during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, which was an attempt by the Hungarian people to overthrow the Soviet-dominated government. The revolution was ultimately crushed by the Soviet Union, and Nagy was arrested and sentenced to death.
