Isaac I Komnenos became emperor in 1057 after the death of Michael VI. Isaac was a successful general who had led several campaigns against the Pechenegs and the Turks. He was also a popular figure among the people of Constantinople, who were tired of the weak and ineffective rule of Michael VI.
