Ivan Bagramyan was an ethnic Armenian born in what is now Georgia. He fought in the Russian Civil War and World War II, and became a Marshal of the Soviet Union in 1945. He is considered one of the most successful Soviet military commanders of World War II, and is credited with playing a key role in the liberation of Ukraine and Belarus.
