Latvian Max Reyter was the first non-Slavic military officer to become a Front commander in WW2 before Bagramyan. Reyter was born in 1886 in Riga, Latvia, and joined the Russian Imperial Army in 1904. He fought in the Russo-Japanese War and was wounded twice. In 1917, he joined the Red Army and fought in the Russian Civil War.
