James Ewell Brown Stuart graduated from West Point in 1854, becoming a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He served in the Mexican-American War and was brevetted twice for gallantry. After the war, he served in the West, where he became known for his skills as a cavalry officer. In 1861, he joined the Confederate Army and quickly rose to the rank of major general.
