  • During the Civil War

  • After the Civil War

  • Never

Answer

Stuart participated in the violence of Bleeding Kansas before the Civil War. The conflict began in 1854 when the Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed, which allowed settlers in the two territories to decide whether or not to allow slavery. Pro-slavery and anti-slavery settlers flooded into the territories, and violence soon erupted. Stuart was a pro-slavery advocate, and he participated in the attacks on anti-slavery settlers.
