Confederate cavalry commander J.E.B. Stuart was mortally wounded at the Battle of Yellow Tavern on May 11, 1864. Stuart's cavalry had been raiding Union lines near Richmond, Virginia, when they were intercepted by Union cavalry under the command of Philip Sheridan. In the ensuing battle, Stuart was shot and killed. His death was a significant blow to the Confederate army, as Stuart was one of their most effective cavalry commanders.
