At the age of 15, Turner had his first work exhibited at the Royal Academy. It was a watercolor entitled "A View of the Archbishop's Palace, Lambeth". Turner's father, a barber and wigmaker, did not want him to pursue a career in art. However, Turner's talent was evident from an early age, and he was eventually able to persuade his father to let him study at the Royal Academy.
