The J1 League, Japan’s top professional football league, has undergone two name changes since its inception. Originally established as the Japan Soccer League in 1965, it was renamed the J.League in 1992 to mark the start of a new era of professional football in Japan. In 2015, the league underwent its most recent name change to the J1 League to differentiate it from the newly created J2 and J3 leagues.
