Jacob Grimm formulated Grimm's law alone. He did this after studying the sounds of Old High German, Old Saxon, and Old Norse, and comparing them with the sounds of modern German, English, Dutch, and other Germanic languages. Grimm's law is a major contribution to the study of the history of the Germanic languages.
