According to most popular and probably accurate accounts, James Bowie died in his bed defending himself against assassins. He was attacked by three men who had entered his room at the Alamo, and he fought them off for several minutes before being mortally wounded. His death was a blow to the morale of the Texan defenders, and they were eventually defeated by the Mexican army.
