Answer
Surgeon James Braid was a Scottish physician and surgeon who is credited with developing the technique of hypnosis. Braid's interest in hypnosis began in 1841 when he witnessed a demonstration of mesmerism by the itinerant mesmerist Charles Lafontaine. Braid was skeptical of Lafontaine's claims, but he was intrigued by the phenomenon of hypnosis and began to experiment with it himself.
