As the eldest son of the 9th Earl of Dalhousie, James Broun-Ramsay inherited the title of Earl of Dalhousie before succeeding his father as the 10th Earl. He held this title until 1849 when he was further honored with the title of Marquess of Dalhousie in recognition of his exceptional service as the Governor-General of India from 1847 to 1856.
