Answer
The Military Cross (MC) is a decoration awarded to officers of the British Armed Forces for "gallant conduct during active operations against the enemy on land". It is the third-highest award for gallantry in the British honours system, after the Victoria Cross and the Distinguished Service Order. The MC was instituted in 1915 during the First World War and has been awarded in subsequent conflicts.
