James Larkin was born in Liverpool, England, in 1876. He grew up in a poor neighborhood and was forced to work at a young age to help support his family. In his teens, he joined the British trade union movement and became active in the fight for workers' rights. In 1907, he moved to Ireland and became involved in the Irish trade union movement.
