The 1996 Everest Disaster was a series of events on Mount Everest that resulted in the deaths of eight climbers. Jamling Norgay was one of the survivors. The disaster occurred on May 10–11, 1996, during a storm on the south side of the mountain. The storm caused climbers to become separated from each other, and many were unable to descend safely. Norgay was among those who survived the disaster.
